Legacy Wheels makes donating a car in North Carolina simple: we come to you with truly free towing. Whether you’re in Charlotte’s Dilworth or Ballantyne, Raleigh’s North Hills or Brier Creek, Greensboro’s Friendly Center area, or a more rural spot outside Boone or Jacksonville, your pickup is $0 out of pocket. The tow cost is covered from the eventual sale of your vehicle and is never billed back to you.
Here’s how it works locally: you call or submit our online form, we confirm your North Carolina address and a pickup window, and a nearby towing partner arrives with a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck. Running or not, parked in a driveway, apartment lot, or on-street where legal in places like Durham, Cary, Fayetteville, Wilmington, or Winston-Salem—we can usually pick it up within a few business days. On pickup day, you simply leave the signed NC title and keys in the agreed spot with the vehicle. Your donation benefits Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3), and you receive a tax receipt, typically for at least $500.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Request your free North Carolina pickup
Call Legacy Wheels or use our online form with your NC location (for example, Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Wilmington, Asheville, or a nearby town) and basic vehicle details. Tell us if it runs, where it’s parked, and any access notes. We’ll confirm that pickup is 100% free to you anywhere in North Carolina and start matching you with a local towing partner.
2. Choose a convenient pickup window
We’ll offer a pickup window based on your address—timing is often faster in metro areas like the Triangle or Charlotte and may take a bit longer in more rural parts of the mountains or Sandhills. You don’t have to be home as long as we can access the vehicle, title, and keys, but you can choose a day and time window that fits your schedule.
3. Prepare your NC title and vehicle for tow
Before pickup, remove personal items and any tags you want to keep. In most cases, you’ll sign your North Carolina title over to Legacy Wheels’ processing partner following NC DMV guidelines. Place the signed title and keys where the driver can find them—such as the glove box, under a floor mat, or with a front desk/office if in an apartment complex.
4. Our local tow partner picks up for $0
A professional towing partner from your area arrives with a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck, depending on your vehicle and location. They’ll load your car from your driveway, street-legal parking spot, or apartment lot. There is no fee at the curb—pickup is fully covered from the charity’s sale proceeds. The driver handles all towing logistics and removes the vehicle safely.
5. We process the donation and send your tax receipt
After pickup, your vehicle is sold and proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. Once the sale is complete, you’ll receive a tax receipt by mail. Most donors receive documentation for at least $500; for values over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C with your tax preparer.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight streets, steep drives, or low-clearance parking decks
Tip: In older neighborhoods like Raleigh’s Oakwood or Asheville’s Montford, or in Uptown Charlotte parking decks, a full-size flatbed may not fit. Tell us about tight turns, steep driveways, garages, or deck clearances so we can send the right truck or plan a safe loading spot nearby.
Gated communities and apartment complexes
Tip: Around areas like Cary’s planned communities, Ballantyne, or large Durham apartment complexes, missing gate codes or permits can delay pickup. Share gate codes, on-site office hours, and any HOA or apartment rules so the driver can enter, locate your car, and avoid towing conflicts or citations.
Very rural or mountain addresses
Tip: If you’re outside town near places like Burnsville, Murphy, Elkin, or deep in the Sandhills, routing can take longer and big flatbeds may have limited access. Let us know about gravel roads, narrow bridges, or seasonal conditions so we can set a realistic pickup window and send suitable equipment.
Missing keys, flat tires, or no title in hand
Tip: We can usually still accept non-running cars and flats, but it’s important to mention issues upfront. If you can’t locate your North Carolina title, we’ll explain options based on NC DMV rules. Clear communication helps avoid last-minute cancellations or rescheduling with the local tow partner.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is tricky—for example, your car is stuck behind another vehicle in a tight Wilmington beach lot, parked in a cramped Chapel Hill apartment deck, or on a steep mountain road near Waynesville—you still have options. In some cases, a friend or family member can move the car to a more accessible street or lot for us. Occasionally, our towing partners can meet you at a nearby public location, repair shop, or workplace with easier access. If the vehicle has to remain in a restricted or underground area, we’ll talk through what’s possible locally and whether a short-term move or temporary permission from your HOA or property manager can make the pickup work.
