Donate your car by Dec 31 for this year’s NC tax break

In North Carolina, the IRS counts the date your car is actually picked up. To claim this year’s deduction, Legacy Wheels must tow it by December 31. Free, fast pickup—lock in your slot now.

In North Carolina, your car donation counts for this tax year only if the vehicle is physically picked up on or before December 31. The IRS goes by the pickup date, not the day you call or fill out the form. That means a scheduled pickup on January 2 will apply to next year’s taxes, even if you booked it in December. To be safe, Legacy Wheels recommends you schedule your free pickup 3–5 business days before December 31 so our Heritage for the Blind towing partners can get to you in time.

Legacy Wheels serves donors across North Carolina—from Charlotte, Concord, and Huntersville to Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Wilmington, and Asheville. Whether you’re in South End Charlotte, North Raleigh, Southpoint in Durham, or out near Gastonia or Clayton, we can usually arrange fast, free pickup Monday through Saturday, even during the holiday rush. We accept most vehicles running or not, and you’ll receive a written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098-C when required) after your car sells. Start now, beat the year-end crunch, and turn your car into a same-year tax deduction that funds services for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute North Carolina donation form

2 minutes

Enter your contact information, North Carolina pickup address, and basic vehicle details. It takes about two minutes and there’s no obligation. The sooner you submit, the more likely we can lock in a pickup date on or before December 31 for this tax year.

2

Get your year-end pickup window confirmed

Same day

A Heritage for the Blind tow coordinator will call you (usually within 24 hours, often sooner) to confirm a pickup day and time that works for you. Tell them you need pickup by December 31 for this year’s deduction so they prioritize a qualifying date.

3

Prepare your keys, title, and access

10–15 minutes

Clear personal items from the car, find your title if available, and make sure the vehicle is accessible for the tow truck. No repairs or inspection are needed—non-running and damaged vehicles are welcome. You don’t need to be home in many North Carolina locations if paperwork is arranged in advance.

4

Vehicle pickup on or before December 31

15–30 minutes

On pickup day, the towing partner arrives, completes the paperwork, and takes the vehicle at no cost to you. The IRS treats this pickup date as your official donation date, which is what determines which tax year you can claim the deduction in.

5

Receive your tax acknowledgment and 1098-C (if applicable)

Within weeks after sale

After your vehicle sells, Legacy Wheels sends you a written acknowledgment, and if it sells for more than $500, you’ll receive IRS Form 1098-C. Even if the paperwork arrives later, your deduction year is locked in as the date the car was picked up—so long as that was on or before December 31.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Donation date is the pickup date

For IRS purposes, the donation date is when Heritage for the Blind actually picks up your vehicle, not when you schedule or sign the form. To claim this tax year’s deduction, the truck must tow it away on or before December 31.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Legacy Wheels (through Heritage for the Blind) will send you IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the sale price, which usually determines the maximum amount you may claim as a charitable deduction.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To benefit from a car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you take the standard deduction instead, you may not get additional tax savings from the vehicle donation.

30-day post-sale receipt timing

IRS rules allow the charity up to 30 days after the vehicle is sold to send your written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C. It’s normal to receive your tax documents weeks after pickup; your deduction year is still based on the pickup date.

Dec 31 cutoff for this year’s deduction

If your vehicle is picked up on or before December 31, you may generally claim the deduction for that tax year. A January 1 or later pickup shifts the deduction to the next tax year, even if you called in December.

FAQ

If I schedule pickup in December but the truck comes in January, which tax year is my deduction?
The IRS goes by the pickup date, not the date you scheduled. If your car is towed away on January 2, it counts as a donation for the new tax year—even if you booked it in December. To claim this year, make sure your North Carolina pickup is completed on or before December 31.
How late in December can I contact Legacy Wheels and still make the deadline?
We recommend you submit your form or call at least 3–5 business days before December 31, especially in busier North Carolina areas like Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and Wilmington. We do pick up Monday–Saturday during the holiday season, but last-minute requests may have fewer open slots.
Do I get my tax receipt before I file if my car is picked up on December 31?
Your deduction year is locked in as long as the car is picked up on or before December 31. The written acknowledgment and, if required, Form 1098-C are mailed after the vehicle sells, which may be weeks later. You can still file using that tax year; just keep the documents with your records once they arrive.
Can I donate a non-running or damaged car in North Carolina?
Yes. Legacy Wheels accepts most vehicles in any condition—non-running, damaged, or not inspected. Free towing is included across much of North Carolina, from Asheville to Fayetteville. As long as the tow truck can safely access it, it can usually be donated, and the pickup date still controls your deduction year.
Is Heritage for the Blind a qualified 501(c)(3) charity?
Yes. Heritage for the Blind is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446). Proceeds from your Legacy Wheels car donation support services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Because it’s a qualified charity, your donation may be tax-deductible if you itemize deductions on your federal return.
What paperwork do I need to donate my car in North Carolina?
In most cases, you’ll need your North Carolina vehicle title and your driver’s license or ID. Our towing partners help complete the transfer at pickup. You don’t need an inspection, emissions test, or repairs. Just clear personal items, sign where directed, and the team will handle the rest at no cost.
How does my car donation help people who are blind or visually impaired?
Legacy Wheels car donations are processed for the benefit of Heritage for the Blind. Your vehicle is sold, and the proceeds help fund programs and services for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. You turn an unused car into vital support—while potentially receiving a tax deduction for the year the car is picked up.
