In North Carolina, your car donation counts for this tax year only if the vehicle is physically picked up on or before December 31. The IRS goes by the pickup date, not the day you call or fill out the form. That means a scheduled pickup on January 2 will apply to next year’s taxes, even if you booked it in December. To be safe, Legacy Wheels recommends you schedule your free pickup 3–5 business days before December 31 so our Heritage for the Blind towing partners can get to you in time.
Legacy Wheels serves donors across North Carolina—from Charlotte, Concord, and Huntersville to Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Wilmington, and Asheville. Whether you’re in South End Charlotte, North Raleigh, Southpoint in Durham, or out near Gastonia or Clayton, we can usually arrange fast, free pickup Monday through Saturday, even during the holiday rush. We accept most vehicles running or not, and you’ll receive a written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098-C when required) after your car sells. Start now, beat the year-end crunch, and turn your car into a same-year tax deduction that funds services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Your year-end donation timeline
Start the 2-minute North Carolina donation form
2 minutesEnter your contact information, North Carolina pickup address, and basic vehicle details. It takes about two minutes and there’s no obligation. The sooner you submit, the more likely we can lock in a pickup date on or before December 31 for this tax year.
Get your year-end pickup window confirmed
Same dayA Heritage for the Blind tow coordinator will call you (usually within 24 hours, often sooner) to confirm a pickup day and time that works for you. Tell them you need pickup by December 31 for this year’s deduction so they prioritize a qualifying date.
Prepare your keys, title, and access
10–15 minutesClear personal items from the car, find your title if available, and make sure the vehicle is accessible for the tow truck. No repairs or inspection are needed—non-running and damaged vehicles are welcome. You don’t need to be home in many North Carolina locations if paperwork is arranged in advance.
Vehicle pickup on or before December 31
15–30 minutesOn pickup day, the towing partner arrives, completes the paperwork, and takes the vehicle at no cost to you. The IRS treats this pickup date as your official donation date, which is what determines which tax year you can claim the deduction in.
Receive your tax acknowledgment and 1098-C (if applicable)
Within weeks after saleAfter your vehicle sells, Legacy Wheels sends you a written acknowledgment, and if it sells for more than $500, you’ll receive IRS Form 1098-C. Even if the paperwork arrives later, your deduction year is locked in as the date the car was picked up—so long as that was on or before December 31.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Donation date is the pickup date
For IRS purposes, the donation date is when Heritage for the Blind actually picks up your vehicle, not when you schedule or sign the form. To claim this tax year’s deduction, the truck must tow it away on or before December 31.
Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500
If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Legacy Wheels (through Heritage for the Blind) will send you IRS Form 1098-C. This form shows the sale price, which usually determines the maximum amount you may claim as a charitable deduction.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To benefit from a car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you take the standard deduction instead, you may not get additional tax savings from the vehicle donation.
30-day post-sale receipt timing
IRS rules allow the charity up to 30 days after the vehicle is sold to send your written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C. It’s normal to receive your tax documents weeks after pickup; your deduction year is still based on the pickup date.
Dec 31 cutoff for this year’s deduction
If your vehicle is picked up on or before December 31, you may generally claim the deduction for that tax year. A January 1 or later pickup shifts the deduction to the next tax year, even if you called in December.
